#IamClimateJustice

We will use the power of the law to ask the world’s governments a simple question: What are they doing to protect future generations?

Our Story

I AM CLIMATE JUSTICE (ICJ)

ICJ has three meanings:

ICJ- The movement. “I am Climate Justice.” It means that in the hands of each and every one of us lie the power to give the present and future generations the kind of Earth and climate they deserve. That is the meaning of “Climate Justice.”

ICJ – The principle. Inter-generational Climate Justice: Does our generation have a duty -and do future generations have the right -- to have air to breathe, water to drink and land to grow food?

ICJ – The venue. International Court of Justice in Hague, Netherlands. The highest court of the world. It will be the platform and legal avenue where the young people of the world are determined to tell their story. They will put the issues on the table for proper discussion, to spark action, and one way or another, we will arrive at a resolution.

Island states like the Philippines stand to be the most vulnerable in the ongoing climate crisis. When we speak of climate change, what’s at stake is our home. We have some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes and yet we are also dealing with some of the most destructive effects of climate change. This is why I am Climate Justice was born. We have to give ourselves and the future generations a fighting chance against the climate crisis.

We started as a group of young people who believe that in the face of the climate crisis, the time for talk is over. If we want something done, we must do it ourselves. We must take action and we must call on others to do the same. We are tired of waiting for our leaders to take responsibility for the protection of our life sources. It is time we demand from them accountability for the destruction of our Land, Air, & Waters (LAW) of Life. What we want is climate justice but ultimately, what we seek is the protection of our home and our right to a future.

But we understand that to effect real and lasting change, it must begin within. This is why we ask all our members to sign a personal Pledge before joining the movement. We want each individual to take ownership over their actions. Hence, I am Climate Justice. We believe that we hold in our hands the power to give the present and the future generations the climate and the Earth that they deserve. Yes, I am Climate Justice (ICJ).

Our Vision

We felt, more than we knew perhaps,  the gravity of the climate crisis. Our sea levels are constantly rising, our forests depleted, our wildlife in danger of being extinct—the effects of climate change is real. The dangers are clear, present, and urgent. We knew we needed rapid transformative change to face, and embrace, the crisis of climate and of Life on Earth.

What do we want to achieve? First, we want to stir up national and global cooperation, especially among the youth, to prod and support strong and sustained actions to address the climate crisis. Second, we want to impress upon short-term governments their long-term duties to protect humankind from worsening climate-caused disasters.

How do we do this? Our mission is simple:

1.       Personal change – Hence, I am Climate Justice. We want to emphasise the role of the individual in combating climate change.  We want people to be accountable over their own actions. Simple acts of mindfulness in the use of Life-sources of Land, Air and Water – the LAW of Life. For example, turning off lights and gadgets when not in use, using a glass of water when brushing, washing, and properly sorting our waste, etc. may seem tiny and insignificant. But in due time and with enough numbers, it will make a big difference.

2.       Collective change– changing the principles, policies, and practices to ensure that humankind preserves the Land, Air, and Water (LAW) of Life for the present and future generations. In order for governments of the world to understand their duties and obligations to protect humankind from the degrading effects of the climate crisis, we will mobilise a global youth-led campaign for an International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion. To do this, we will persuade as many United Nations (UN) Member States to pass the General Assembly Resolution to ask for the advice of the International Court of Justice and have the highest political organ of the UN request for an Advisory Opinion.

Why we’re here?

We believe that in order to fight climate change, we must seek the Path for a Climate of Change. That is our why. We must be the change we seek.

“I hold in my hands the power to give justice to Life on Earth, Life of the present and future generations.”
