The International Court of Justice is answering a global call: What are countries legally required to do to protect people and the planet?
On the occasion of the ICJ AO Delivery Date, we are hosting a movie night in Flora Film Theater together with World’s Youth for Climate Justice, Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change, and Interactive Media Foundation - screening their documentary YUMI. Followed by a panel on climate justice, the importance of international climate law, and the ICJAO campaign.
YUMI - The Whole World
Taking the world’s biggest problem to the world’s highest court. YUMI tells the inspiring story of law students Solomon, Vishal, and Romabeth, who set out from the University of the South Pacific to take climate change to the International Court of Justice through the United Nations to save their home islands from extinction.
What does ICJ AO Delivery Date mean?
The International Court of Justice has announced the delivery date (23 July) of its historic first advisory opinion on the obligations of States in relation to climate change. We stand with 96 States and 11 international organisations who helped shape this unprecedented global effort, the largest advisory opinion proceedings in ICJ history.
The advisory opinion will clarify the legal responsibilities of States in addressing the climate crisis, including:
- The obligation to prevent climate harm;
- The protection of present and future generations;
- Remedies and reparations for climate-related damage;
- Corporate accountability under international law;
- The urgent and equitable phase-out of fossil fuels.
