Every Goal Matters in Humanity's Toughest Matchup

On 19 July, 2026, the world gathered to witness the FIFA World Cup Final. Billions of people across the globe celebrated every goal scored on the field over the past weeks, each representing determination, teamwork, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence. After the final whistle, this determination, teamwork, and resilience is needed for an even greater challenge.
At the Caribbean Front of World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ), we recognise that the world's biggest match is not played on the field but on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Likewise, every State that fulfills its climate commitments, strengthens its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), safeguards vulnerable communities, and respects international law achieves a goal for the present, future generations and the yet to be born. Leaving a habitable world will leave a larger legacy than winning the world cup.
For decades, from the establishment of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), through the Kyoto Protocol, to the Paris Agreement (2015), the international community has sought to balance national sovereignty with collective responsibility. As the impacts of climate change intensify, there is an increasing need for legal certainty regarding the obligations of States and the consequences of failing to meet them.
More recently, on 20 May 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution introduced by the Republic of Vanuatu on the operationalisation of the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on climate change. The resolution was adopted by a recorded vote, with 141 Member States voting in favour, 28 abstaining, and 8 voting against. It builds upon the International Court of Justice's clarification highlighting that States have legal obligations to protect the climate system and recognises actions causing significant environmental harm under international law.
The advisory opinion signals that decisions affecting the global climate are no longer solely matters of political choice but are increasingly subject to legal scrutiny and accountability marking an important milestone in strengthening international cooperation, advancing the rule of law, and reaffirming that sustainable development, environmental protection, and human dignity must be pursued together.
We encourage everyone across the globe to join us today as we equipped ourselves with the ICJ advisory opinion, a weapon in our battle against climate change to secure the ultimate victory: a future defined by justice, resilience, and sustainability! By honouring international commitments, strengthening climate ambition, and protecting future generations, every nation has an opportunity to achieve meaningful progress for our planet.
